The Football Match

As part of the programme for History in Action we played in a seventeenth century style game of football. The game was played at that time with a variable number of players chasing a leather ball filled with straw (or whatever else came to hand I guess).

Our game was played against the Marquis of Winchester's Regiment and the 30 strong Fairfax team won 5 - 0.

Winchester's team limber up for the game. In typical Malignant fashion they spend their time chanting about their King, that's Charles Stuart rather than King Jesus.

The Godly Elect on the other hand get down on their knees and pray to their King for the victory that is so deservedly theirs for being the army of the Saints in the fight against the godless papists.

The game gets underway with both sides chasing the ball

Simon Kirk, editor of Fox's newsletter Eikonoklastes, gets the ball and makes a run for the malignant's goal followed by Nigel Parry, Fox's 2ic and another unknown Fairfax player.

Things quickly bog down into a scrum as the lack of rules mean that there can be no fouls, and the lack of a referee means that the game can't be stopped anyway.

Scotty gets the ball and starts a run for the papist goal.

The Fairfax players use the only sure-fire way of getting the ball out of a scrum.

Havenojoy Hargeaves decides that the ungodly game must be ended before the malignants break our perfect scoring record by getting one back. He marches onto the field with a file of musketeers.

The victorious team lords it over one of the vanquished.
