'Death March', September 2003

Some intrepid members of the Fairfax Battalia, including several members of Fox's, went on a 'Death March' through Wales in full kit to see what it was like to be on the march as a seventeenth century soldier. The march was organised by Charles Kightly.

Here are some of the photos that Chopper Williams took on the march (some may be by Paul Norton).

This is the assembled marchers at the start of their long trek. Charles Kightly can be seen in the lead with his staff and blanket across his chest. Next in line are Laura Heales and Chopper Williams, others too small to recognise from the picture. The 'hobbits' are off to the side (Tom & Lucy Holton).

And it being Wales there was more than one hill to climb...

The marchers take a well deserved water break part of the way through the first day. From left to right in the picture are: unknocwn pikeman (with his back to us), Laura Heales can be seen adjusting her boots, Mutts, Ken Bland, ?Dave, Paul Norton, three unknown, probably John Stoker (with his back to us), and Charles Kightly on the right. On the ground you can see the amount of equipment each soldier carries along with some of the pikes amd the drum.

This is Fox's CO Mutts (aka Dr Stephen Rutherford) from his best side! Despite the long and arduaous trek Mutts played the drum he carried ever step of the way, apart from the bit in the peat bog that is when it became somewhat challenging to keep in step! He is talking to John Stoker

After a very chilly night (for most) camped out in the open without tents the marchers are up at the crack of dawn.
